The 2023 celebration of Tunkhannock’s Founder’s Day will welcome some major new attractions as well as an assortment of artisans and crafters, along with new and old food vendors, music and entertainment. The Tunkhannock Business and Professional Association planning committee has pulled together activities that celebrate Tunkhannock history and traditions. This year, the annual celebration, scheduled for Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, brings the Allegany River Seneca Dancers, a Native American dance group, that showcases the traditional songs and dances of the Iroquois. Their performances, along with the storytelling of Perry Ground, will share the beliefs, customs and history of the Native Americans who once called this region home. These performances will take place in the First National Bank parking lot on Tioga St. and are sponsored by the Overlook Estate Foundation.
This year’s Family Fun Zone shifts to Warren Street with attractions including the Tunkhannock Area Robotics Team, the P & G Product Truck, Trivia Master Brad, the Tunkhannock Public Library, TreHab Community Action and the Ice Cream Truck 1961.
“A record number of vendors has applied to the event this year”, relates Taylor Finan TBPA Board President. “The committee worked to select a wide variety of artisans, some popular vendors who have been with the show for years as well as some newer artisans representing unique talents and techniques for people to select a treasure or two from. Some of this year’s features include home décor crafted in unique materials, animal treats and fashions, farm fresh food, wood crafts and custom designed metal products for home and garden.”
Visitors to Tunkhannock can also tour the Classic Car Show and the Modal A car collection at Sherwood Chevrolet. Tunkhannock’s specialty shops and restaurants will also be ready to welcome visitors. Studio 79 on Warren Street has a spring art exhibit, Ebb’s Candy Jar on Bridge is offering “Pucker Powder” the latest candy craze, where kids can create their own flavor filled straws, and the Tunkhannock Assembly of God church on Bridge street with a unique Family fun day.
The team at the Endless Mountains Veterinary Center has planned information and activities for all the pet lovers visiting the event. Attractions include dog and cat shows with voting for the cats on line, basket raffles with proceeds going to the Griffen Pond Animal Shelter and the Wyoming County Humane Society. Also visit with the goats from VivaVilla Farm.
A wide array of vendors will be offering art, fabric crafts, oil and water color paintings, woodworking, specialty food items, jewelry, home décor, photography, and other unique trades and professions. Several non-profit and service groups are also taking advantage of the great atmosphere to provide information.
The office for the Wyoming County Press Examiner, on Tioga Street, is serving as a welcome center where visitors can stop for information.
The Dietrich Theater will host a variety of activities include a special 11 am presentation by Dr. Gere Reisinger “Forgotten Founders: The Roots of Matriarchal Democracy in the Kittatinny (Endless Mountains”. He will present a fascinating discussion of how much of the special environmental treasures valued today were also integral parts of Native American culture and celebrations, for example the Miller Mountain area and the new Seneca Park Trail. Also, the Dietrich Theater hosts the traditional sale of Strawberry Short Cake, and basket raffles.
The Kitson Arts Alliance is working with TBPA to organize music at three locations; in front of Kitson Art Gallery, at the corner of Tioga and Warren near the Old Store and Twigs, and also at the Intersection of Tioga and Pine, near Wyoming County Beverage. Line ups include including Dave Brown and The Dishonest Fiddlers, JP Williams Blues Band, Matt Bennick, Alex D. Key and the Barbershop Singers.
In the evening the Dietrich Theater will be hosting “Macbeth”, in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park, at 7:00 p.m. The free production will be performed by the Gamut Theatre Group and is sponsored by The Overlook Estate Foundation. Please bring your own blanket or chair.
